Winter

Maple Festival

When: Saturday, March 27, 2010, 10am - 4pm
(this event also takes place on Sunday, March 28 but the compost education booth may not be there that day)
Where: Cayuga Nature Center, 1420 Taughannock Blvd, Ithaca
Description: The event offers a pancake breakfast, local music and dance, maple syrup tastings, history of sugaring in the Finger Lakes, and more.

Spring

Compost Fair at Ithaca Earth Day

When: Sunday, April 18, 2010, noon - 5 pm
Where: Ithaca Farmer's Market Pavilion (3rd Street Extension)
Description: Come to the Compost Fair to see and experience ALL aspects of composting. There will be games, contests, prizes, interactive displays and activities for kids of all ages. Come and see the various ways to compost and have your questions answered by Master Composters – just in time for spring clean up and gardening! The Fair will be held in conjunction with Ithaca Earth Day, which features live music, food and over 70 exhibitors including CCETC’s Local Foods Program. Admission is free and open to the public.

Annual Spring Garden Fair and Plant Sale

When: May 15, 2010, 9am - 1pm
Where: Ithaca High School, 1401 N. Cayuga St, Ithaca
Description: Purchase plants grown by local gardeners and learn about how to grow different types of plants and selecting native plants for your garden.

Ithaca Festival

When: late May / early June
Where: Ithaca Commons (Fri, Sat), Stewart Park (Sun)
Description: The Ithaca Festival is a four-day celebration of art, food, music, families and the community. Over the past couple years, the festival has become "zero-waste" - offering compost in addition to recycling and selling all food and drink in compostable cups, plates, etc.

Summer

Grassroots

When: July 22 - 25, 2010, day and night
Where: Trumansburg Fairgrounds
Description: As the slogan goes, Grassroots is "music lovers' paradise." It also is a festival where composting, recycling and other forms of waste reduction are embraced. Food vendors compost and attendees are encouraged to compost and recycle as much as they can before using the trash. Click on the "composting-recycling-garbage" link on their site for more info and a fantastic 3-minute narrated slide show.

Farm City Day

When: mid-August
Where: TBA
Description: Spend the day on a working Tompkins County farm. Learn about the animals, crops and meet the people who care for them. Experience many related educational exhibits, demonstrations and hands-on activities.

Fall

Apple Harvest Festival

When: late September / early October
Where: Ithaca Commons
Description: A weekend celebration of food, fun and fall bounty. The three-day festival attracts about 30,000 people and more than 150 performers. Vendors include farms, wineries, bakeries, crafters and a wide variety of food merchants. Activities include music, dancing, food tasting, an apple pie eating contest, carnival rides, rock climbing, craft viewing, street performances and, of course, apples! Sponsored by the Ithaca Downtown Alliance.

America Recycles Day

When: mid-November
Where: TBA
Description: A celebration of Recycling in Tompkins County sponsored by the Tompkins County Solid Waste Management Division. Exhibitors offer interactive activities around the “4R’s” – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rebuy. Education is the first step and this event is a fun way to start.
